School Visits
Since the programme's conception in 2007, we have been delighted by the enthusiasm from teachers, students and mentors alike!
Examples of just some of the visits that have been carried out over the past year:
Wycombe Abbey Conference, 29th September
Women’s Leadership Conference for girls in the school’s Upper Sixth and also for girls at other local schools. Three of our ambassadors and recently shortlised candidate for the Asian Women of Achievement Awards spoke during the day; Swati Bhargava, CEO of Pouring Pounds, Shireen Irani, executive director of i-ProBono and Divya Talwar, broadcast journalist for the BBC Asian Network.
Ursuline High School Conference, 30 September
Young Female students were encouraged to “Be the change you want in the world” at the recent Student Leaders conference organised by the Ursuline High School, Wimbledon on behalf of the Association of Maintained Girls Schools (AMDGS). The conference enabled over 100 students from 19 all-girls schools from around the country to discuss the issues of importance to them. Students collaborated on a list of actions to make a difference to the education of girls now to take to the (AMDGS) Headteachers’ Conference.
The conference was launched with speeches from four Women of Achievement from the Aviva Ambassadors’ Programme. Sophia Ahmed, Lucinda Garrett, Sonal Thakrar and Katy Tuncer all shared their stories and encouraged students “to aim high without apology” and to seize all the opportunities they can to gain experience and work on their weaknesses to enable them to gain the skills and above all the confidence to achieve their ambitions.
St John Fisher Catholic School, 5th October
Tracey Crouch, MP for Chatham and Aylesford spoke to sixth form students on improving self esteem.
Chelmsford School, 5th December
Miriam Gonzalez-Durantez, partner at DLA Piper and wife of the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, took part in a visit to the school in December to speak to a group of sixth form students
Wycombe Abbey Careers evening, 10th December
Wycombe Abbey School held a Careers Seminar evening, where 25 speakers came to speak to all our students aged 15-18 about their careers. The girls particularly enjoyed hearing first-hand about a range of different careers, from banking to fashion, journalism, retail, medicine and law. Girls were able to choose several seminar sessions to attend where they were able to hear the speakers in small groups and to ask lots of individual questions. The speakers commented on the interest and enthusiasm of the girls, whose eyes they had really opened to the world of work.” Emily Boswell, teacher at Wycombe
Rochester Grammar School, 19 January 2011
Dr Raina Zarb Adami, surgecial research fellow, The Restoration of Appearance and Function Trust
"Through the Women of the Future awards, I was recently invited to speak to year 12 students at the Rochester Grammar school. I clearly remember that stage in my life, where the road ahead seems rather like an obstacle race. Events such as these, serve to encourage the students that the pathway can be navigated, and very successfully too!"
